DANLERS electronic time lag switches installed in halls of residences at Oxford Brookes University have caused significant reductions in energy costs and carbon emissions.
Peter Quigley, the service design engineer on the project said; ‘Residents were leaving the lights on all the time. With DANLERS controls fitted, the amount of time that the lights are on has reduced but it is still safe for student residents.’
Time lag switches save energy by turning off the load automatically after a time period has elapsed; ensuring loads are not left on unnecessarily.
Switches were installed in the communal areas of several buildings at Oxford Brookes and during the 6 month period between July and December 2007, reduced the amount of time that lights were left on by 2858 hours. As a result, the university significantly reduced their energy bills as well as reducing their CO2 emissions by 1.27 tonnes in just 6 months.
Peter Quigley, the service design engineer on the project said; ‘With DANLERS controls fitted, savings are substantial and lowering the amount of maintenance required helps ensure that when the lights are needed they are working.’
