Lighting management systems from Ex-Or were specified throughout a newly built prestigious office complex near Aberdeen, designed to be one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in Scotland.
In the £120,000 deal, the Ex-Or MLS Digital Managed Lighting System and SceneSelect II scene-setting and dimming system are being deployed in almost all areas of the Acergy office campus at Westhill Business Park.
The bespoke multi-million pound campus covers a 17 acre area and features a 10,700 m2 office building on three levels which includes open plan and cellular offices, conference facilities, training rooms and restaurant. There is an extensive workshop and warehousing area and an archive building on the campus where Ex-Or lighting control is also in operation. In addition, Ex-Or’s lighting controls and systems have been installed in the leisure complex on the site, which incorporates squash courts, multi-purpose gym, weights room, sports hall and function suites for use by Acergy’s 650 staff and their families.
Acergy is a leading seabed-to-surface engineering and construction contractor for the global oil and gas industry. The design for their new campus was to the most stringent environmental specification possible and has achieved a high BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating.
The lighting management systems from Ex-Or ensure the lights throughout the campus only come on where and when needed by automatically taking into account occupancy and natural light levels.
The Ex-Or MLS Digital Managed Lighting System provides a fully integrated lighting management scheme which uses communicating presence detectors that share information on occupancy patterns in all areas of the campus. This is complemented by Ex-Or SceneSelect II which allows Acergy personnel to easily create and subsequently recall custom pre-set scenes. The ability to switch between different pre-sets at the touch of a button also helps to save energy, as lighting can be adjusted according to ambient light levels or set to automatically switch off when areas are not in use.
Solar gain has been maximised and heat loss minimised by the actual aspect and location of the campus buildings. Internal temperature is controlled through a geothermal heat source heating/cooling system making use of the Earth’s constant temperature at 100 m below the surface - the largest commercial system of its kind in Scotland. Other measures employed to reduce the campus’ carbon footprint include grey water harvesting and passive chilled beam cooling.
Said Graham Meil managing director of Acergy UK Ltd: “Our new facility is a fantastic campus and a world class engineering and operational centre for Acergy. Our commitment to building our campus to the highest environmental specification possible is demonstrated by the wide-ranging environmental measures we have taken as instanced by our choice of Ex-Or systems to eliminate the use of unnecessary lighting.”
Building work was carried out by Stewart Milne Group. Ex-Or’s lighting management systems were installed by Richard Irvin Services Ltd on behalf of chartered engineers Cameron Chisholm Dawson Partnership, all of Aberdeen.
